Kaishui Yikai Liu, a Chinese student in London, initially faced challenges while studying abroad during the pandemic. To address his feelings of doubt, he documented over 30 Chinese art and fashion students in his series, “Between Your Eyes and Mine”, exploring themes of identity and belonging. The project highlights the intimate connections among students and the psychological significance of their living spaces. Liu plans to seek residencies after his exhibition while valuing London as an essential part of his journey.
Kaishui Yikai Liu, who moved from Wenzhou, China to London in 2019 to pursue a Master’s in Fashion Photography, initially felt excited about the opportunities the city offered. However, the pandemic forced him back to China, leading to self-doubt about his studies and future. Liu struggled with the language barrier and online classes, which hindered connections with peers, causing him to question his decision to study abroad.
To confront his feelings, Liu launched a two-year documentary project in 2022, photographing over 30 Chinese students studying art and fashion in the UK. His portrait series, “Between Your Eyes and Mine”, now exhibited at Perfetti Gallery, reflects themes of self-identity, cultural differences, and the complex emotions of belonging and alienation. Liu captures his subjects in their personal spaces, revealing their emotional ties to these environments.
The project evolved from Liu’s initial doubts about the value of studying abroad to an appreciation of the narratives shared by fellow students. Originally titled “You Can See Your Own Way Out”, it highlighted the struggles of international students. However, Liu realised that the photographic process, enriched by the stories of his subjects, was more significant than finding clear answers to his questions.
Liu was inspired by the poem “Between Your Eyes and Mine” by Syrian poet Adonis, which encapsulated his desire to reveal intimate connections through photography. He aims to capture fleeting moments of connection and shared experiences. Liu plans to pursue artist residencies in secluded areas post-exhibition but views London as an enduring source of inspiration, filled with stories and experiences, despite its challenges.
Kaishui Yikai Liu’s project, “Between Your Eyes and Mine”, provides profound insights into the lives of international students navigating identity and belonging in London. Through his portraits, Liu illustrates the deep emotional connections forged in temporary living spaces. His work reflects a journey of personal growth and understanding, revealing that shared experiences transcend words and cultural barriers. As he continues his artistic journey, London remains a central theme in his creative exploration.
