Kaishui Yikai Liu, an MA student in Fashion Photography, explores international students’ identities in London through his photographic series “Between Your Eyes and Mine.” The project highlights the tension of belonging and alienation, capturing student experiences in their personal spaces. Inspired by a poem, Liu aims to reflect on the connections formed in shared moments. The exhibition runs until 20 March 2025, showcasing Liu’s journey and the importance of storytelling in his art.
In 2019, Kaishui Yikai Liu moved from Wenzhou, China, to London to pursue an MA in Fashion Photography at the London College of Fashion. Initially excited, the pandemic forced him back to China, which shifted his confidence and raised doubts about his choice to study abroad. Liu found expression through a project photographing over 30 Chinese students, exploring their identities and experiences living in London.
His documentary series, titled “Between Your Eyes and Mine,” is currently displayed at Perfetti Gallery. The series highlights self-identity, cultural differences, and the struggle between belonging and feeling alienated. Liu captures his peers within their personal spaces, showcasing the emotional significance of their environments through personal items.
Initially motivated by his discontent, Liu questioned the value of studying abroad. However, engaging with the students revealed that their experiences could not be easily defined, leading him to evolve the project’s focus. He found inspiration in a line from a poem by Syrian poet Adonis, emphasizing the intimacy and connections in shared experiences.
After the exhibition closes, Liu plans to seek artist residencies in more secluded areas to enrich his work. Despite challenges, he reflects on London as a crucial part of his life, filled with stories and connections. His showcased work is curated by Cristiano Mantovani and will run until 20 March 2025.
