Cunard is launching a photo exhibition for its 185th anniversary to highlight historical images and unsung heroes. The exhibition aims to uncover personal stories, featuring photographs of ship cleaners, a lifeboat owner, and emotional farewells during wars. The exhibition opens on May 28 in Liverpool and will travel with Cunard ships.
Cunard celebrates its 185th anniversary by hosting a photo exhibition titled “Sea of Glamour” in Liverpool, showcasing images from former guests, employees, and archives. The company seeks to uncover stories behind these photos, including one featuring “cyclic cleaners” from the QE2 in 1975.
Among these cleaners, Linda McAndrew recalled the challenging task of maintaining cleanliness as passengers continued to drop litter. Another featured photograph is of David Lawrence, who famously bought a lifeboat from the QE2 at auction and used it in his home in Wales.
Vice President Lee Powell expressed enthusiasm about connecting with those depicted in these impactful images: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the incredible response to our call for photos.” They aim to document personal stories contributing to Cunard’s legacy.
Additionally, the exhibition features sentimental scenes such as a couple bidding farewell during the Falklands War in 1982 and young men playing football during the QE2’s construction in 1967, recalling shared histories of the ship. Cunard invites anyone who recognizes themselves in these photographs to share their stories through email at cunardphotography@cunard.co.uk.
Curated by Mary McCartney, daughter of Sir Paul McCartney, the exhibition opens on May 28 at the Liver Building before touring globally on Cunard ships.
