Massive Attack and The Avalanches lead a project transmitting music to the moon for Piccadilly Un:Plugged, an art installation in London. Created by Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian, the event runs until March 8, 2025, using advanced technology to transform audio signals and featuring interactive elements. It culminates with a film screening reflecting on humanity’s exploration spirit.

Massive Attack and The Avalanches, along with several artists, have transmitted original music to the moon as part of a new London art installation at Piccadilly Circus. Running until March 8, 2025, this public exhibit, called Piccadilly Un:Plugged, was created by Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian, founder of NASA’s International Space Orchestra, showcasing an alternative approach to space exploration.

Ben Hayoun-Stépanian explained the project’s aim, stating, “We are literally collaborating with the moon—DJing with the moon—not to extract minerals, but to support alternative visions for the future.” The installation challenges the exploitation often seen in current space missions.

The installation uses “earth-moon-earth” technology to transmit audio signals to the moon, where the sounds transform and return to Earth. The Lovell Telescope at Manchester University receives these unique soundwaves. Notable tracks include a new piece from eobiont featuring Armenian heartbeats and Massive Attack’s cover of the Russian punk song “Everything is Going According to Plan.”

The Avalanches expressed excitement over their album, We Will Always Love You, being included, stating its journey is fascinating. Piccadilly Un:Plugged also features other installations throughout the West End, including glowing neon cats and asteroid-shaped boulders playing lunar soundscapes. Visitors can use telescopes to view the night sky or “call the moon” via an AI hotline in a red phone box.

The event culminates on March 8 with a screening of Ben Hayoun-Stépanian’s film, exploring humanity’s quest for discovery from oceans to space. More images and details can be found on Instagram.
