Massive Attack premiered an unreleased song at the ‘Piccadilly Un:Plugged’ immersive installation in London. The duo collaborated with Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian and showcased a cover of GrOb’s critique on the Russian state. The installation features EME technology sending sounds to the moon, linking art and science, with the duo hinting at new music and a 2025 tour.
Massive Attack has unveiled an unreleased song during the ‘Piccadilly Un:Plugged’ immersive installation in London, taking place from March 6 to 8. The duo, Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja and Grant ‘Daddy G’ Marshall, collaborated with artist Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian to create a free exhibit as part of Art of London’s Art After Dark initiative.
The song is a cover of ‘Everything is going according to plan’ by Russian punk band GrOb, which critiques the Russian state. Massive Attack stated, “‘Everything is going according to plan’ was written by Yegor Letov in the 1980s” and was previously performed live in 2013. The installation embraces London’s vibrant culture while exploring themes of astronomy and environmentalism, featuring neon art and high-quality telescopes.
One of the installation’s highlights includes using Earth-Moon-Earth (EME) technology to send music to the moon, allowing sounds from different artists to come back altered by lunar acoustics. Professor Simon Garrington described this fusion of science and art as a technical challenge involving powerful telescopes.
In recent conversations, Del Naja disclosed that new music from the duo has been completed, sitting unreleased for four years. He expressed excitement about upcoming projects, saying, “I hate sitting on stuff for too long because I’m the first person to get bored of it.” Massive Attack also confirmed a Manchester show for their 2025 tour plans.
Massive Attack’s debut of an unreleased song in the ‘Piccadilly Un:Plugged’ installation highlights their ongoing creativity and collaboration in the arts. The use of EME technology blends music with scientific innovation, providing unique reactions to sounds transmitted to the moon. The future looks promising, with plans for new music and an upcoming tour showing the duo’s dedication to evolving their sound.
