The Freud Museum in London is hosting an exhibition titled “Women & Freud: Patients, Pioneers, Artists.” It focuses on the influential women in Freud’s life who played crucial roles in shaping psychoanalysis while featuring contemporary female artists who respond to Freud’s legacy today. Notable artists such as Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas are featured, along with works from Louise Bourgeois, Paula Rego, and more, showcased throughout the museum including its garden.
The exhibition combines modern art with historical items such as letters, diaries, and manuscripts, including significant loaned pieces from the Library of Congress. Key historical figures highlighted in the exhibition include Virginia Woolf, who published Freud’s works, and Princess Marie Bonaparte, a patient who aided Freud’s escape from the Nazis. Also featured are early patients like Anna O and Dora, whose experiences influenced the development of psychoanalysis.
Among the exhibit’s highlights are Freud’s heartfelt love letters to his wife Martha, diary excerpts from Lou Andreas-Salomé, and childhood notebooks from Marie Bonaparte. The collection showcases female figures from Freud’s antiquities collection, spanning back to 2000 BC. However, it is the contemporary artworks that are particularly captivating for visitors, including unseen fabric pieces by Paula Rego and striking neon works by Emin.
Curators Lisa Appignanesi and Bryony Davies emphasise the exhibition’s significance, noting that it provides a unique blend of incredible art within Freud’s personal setting, marking an important chapter in his enduring legacy. The exhibition runs until 05 May 2025, supported by the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust.
