FIA President Proposes Return to V10 Engines on Sustainable Fuels for F1

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has proposed that F1 consider a return to V10 engines on sustainable e-fuels. This suggestion comes as the series plans to introduce hybrid regulations in 2026. While the idea is popular among fans, manufacturers currently favour hybrid systems, posing challenges for adopting a nostalgic engine format. The industry’s commitment to hybrid technology may hinder the feasibility of returning to V10s.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has suggested that Formula 1 should consider the possibility of returning to V10 engines fuelled by sustainable e-fuels. This idea comes as F1 is set to introduce new regulations in 2026 featuring a balance between V6 internal combustion engines and electric motors to enhance efficiency and attract more manufacturers, including Audi and Cadillac.

The transition to synthetic fuels aligns with F1’s goal to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by 2030. Ben Sulayem noted the enthusiasm around this topic following the recent F1 launch event in London, where discussions around the sport’s future were sparked. He stated, “We should consider a range of directions including the roaring sound of the V10 running on sustainable fuel.”

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali supports the exploration of alternatives to current hybrid systems, suggesting that simpler and more cost-effective engine solutions might be possible. He emphasised the potential of sustainable fuels without complicating development costs further.

Although the nostalgic appeal of V10 engines is significant among long-time fans, the real challenge lies in whether current and future manufacturers will embrace the idea. Currently, the industry appears committed to hybrid models, with e-fuels still presenting economic and technological challenges.

Paddy Lowe, founder of Zero Petroleum, highlighted the viability of hybrid systems for mainstream automotive use. He indicated that while the idea of V10 engines is intriguing, the hybrid formula remains the leading solution for Formula 1.
